What does it mean if I’m a “channel runner”?
As a channel runner, you operate a channel. Creators will submit video content to you, and you may also have your own video content. These videos can be films, lessons, series, etc. During setup, you will also set the monthly subscription price, as well as what share you will keep in exchange for operating the channel.`
As a channel runner, your job is to market and curate the channel.
What is a channel?
A channel is a collection of videos that people can subscribe to, for a price determined by the “channel runner”. Subscribers can view the videos on a channel, unlimited and on-demand.
We suggest looking at some of the active channels to get an idea for what your own channel will look like.
How much does it cost to be a channel runner?
Xerb does not charge to operate a channel.
What is a creator?
A creator is someone who has video content that they want people to be able to watch on Xerb channels. They upload their work, and can submit it to you and other channels that it’s a good fit for.
How do I bring on creators?
We will set up a multi-use registration link for you which you can give out, and a special code that can be used as well.
Many of our channel runners have simply set up an email template and included the registration link to sign people up. This method has proven extremely effective for many of our channel runners.
How much will I get paid?
70% of the subscription price goes to the channel as a whole. No processing fees, bandwidth, storage costs, or hidden charges: a channel that charges $10 will net $7 for each subscriber. This is called the Channel Revenue.
You can choose a percentage of the Channel Revenue that you would like to keep in exchange for operating the channel. In practice most channels have chosen to keep 10-30%, but the amount is up to you. Creators will see what your percentage is when they submit content to you.
The remaining money is then split amongst all the content on the channel. This is done automatically by us. If you also have content on the channel, you will receive your share in addition to the percentage chosen above.
Can you give an example of the profit sharing?
Let’s say your channel costs subscribers $10/month, and you decide to keep 20% of the channel income. This would mean the Channel Revenue is $7 per subscriber, and you would keep $1.40 (20% of $7). $5.60 is split between everyone with content on the channel (which would include you as well if you have contributed content). The $5.60 is split based on our standardized formula.
Right now the formula is based on length of content versus the total on the channel. We are likely to change this, in whole or in part, to factor in things like view time. Especially at this early stage, we would love to hear your feedback on this.
How do I get paid?
Payment is generally via PayPal, or if you’re in the United States we can also mail you a check. If these options are not possible for you for some reason, please contact us.
You get paid monthly, 30 days after the end of the month. Note there is a $50 payment threshold: this means if you are owed less than $50, your payment will be held until the total you are owed exceeds that amount.
This is the same manner in which creators are paid as well.
How does licensing work?
Licensing is covered in the contracts that we have in place with creators through the Creator Agreement, which means that you don’t need to do any additional licensing. When someone submits content to your channel, you are able to approve it with a single click.
Because everything functions off of a revenue share, you don’t need to pay anything up front to acquire content. In fact, we handle all of the accounting and payments to creators.
You are of course welcome to have any outside arrangements you want, some of our channel runners directly license content that they then release themselves.
Do I have to handle reporting and accounting?
No, we take care of all the accounting and reporting requirements for content on the channels.
